Ein Tag am Meer
kinetic installation for Kaiserbäder Usedom
The kinetic light installation ‘Ein Tag am Meer’ (‘A day at the sea’) is a commissioned work for the Kaiserbäder Usedom and forms the centerpiece of the tourist information in Heringsdorf at the baltic sea. The historic building played an important role in the foundation of the village and now after complete renovation, once again becomes the central starting point for visitors arriving at the baltic sea.
With my team at Studio RLON we were briefed to transport the calm and relaxing atmosphere of a day at the sea into the space. The sparkling light reflections of sunlight on the peaks of waves, the impression of vastness and tranquility are the inspiration for this kinetic sculpture. Wave-shaped mirror segments float weightlessly above the sand of the sea-floor. The reflections on the fluidly moving surface immerse the ceiling and walls in the gentle play of glittering light dancing on water.
Materials: Baltic sea beach sand, polished stainless steel, aluminium corpus, thread, mechanical components, one motor, custom made digital interface and eight custom made spotlights with central building controls integration.
Dimensions: Ø sand: 1750mm, Ø waves: 1450mm, ceiling height: 3000mm
Permanent exhibition, free entry: Touristinformation Seebead Heringsdorf

Producing an astonishing effect at first sight, the installation invites for a closer inspection. The viewers curiosity will be rewarded, since the mechanism completely reveals its components and shows the physical properties of waves and particles. It is possible to decipher exactly how each element contributes to the creation of the effect.
